Dogs are the best listeners! They don't talk back and they don't pass judgement. Sometimes they do what we ask and others times they just look at us with love.

Millions of dogs owners speak to their dogs everyday. Sometimes a one sided conversation emerges and sometimes its just a statement, question or command. Dogs give you their attention by looking at you, lift their ears, wag their tail or sometimes squeal - always positive feedback.

Do you speak to your dog in a ridiculously high pitched voice or a couple of octaves higher than your normal tone? When you come home you can picture yourself saying "How's my baby - I'm home".

Dogs are so loyal they tune in and react to the sound of family member's voices. Many dogs are treated as part of the family, they are part of the pack and we share a form of communication with them. Humans verbalize with words and actions - dogs verbalize with sounds and actions.

In addition to doggie chit chat, commands, corrections and praise are an important part of a dog and dog owner relationship. A dog owner's tone distinguishes between what the response from the dog should be.

It is important to create ground rules for communicating with your dog. One method to get your pet's undivided attention is to trace a line with your finger from your dog's eyes to your eyes. As soon as eye contact is established, talk to your dog. If you need help keeping eye contact, let your dog sniff a dog treat, then hold it at your eye level. If your dog sustains eye contact, offer praise and offer the treat. This training method makes your dog focus and listen to what you are saying as well as interpret your tone. This is how a dog learns to interpret words and tones and turn them into the appropriate action.

The excited how was you day voice and the praise voice even need to be different. One can be playful and lovey dovey, while the praise voice should express recognition. GOOD DOG should be said in an upbeat, happy tone of voice. Your dog will know that what they did was wonderful and to keep doing it.

Dog commands are given in a firm and strong manner. All commands should begin by saying the dog's name. SIT! is a basic command. Practice the command on a walk, before entering the dog park, on a street corner or whenever you need be in control of your dog. When teaching the sit command for the first time, it is important to help your dog to be successful by helping them into the sitting position. Dogs do not understand words, rather associate words and tones with actions.

Correcting a dog behavior needs to be a low and sharp tone. Jumping on people, taking food off the counter are unacceptable behaviors. A correction, such as, NO! lets your dog know they made a bad choice, your dog did the wrong thing.

Most importantly - keep talking to your dog. Communication builds relationships!

No wonder dogs are man's best friend -- because they want to please their owners. If dog owners praise, teach commands and correct bad behavior a loyal, loving relationship will flourish!.

<![CDATA[Koda, The Wonder Dog]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/koda-the-wonder-dog/ Koda is the wise mentor and hiking companion of Gail Lynne Goodwin, the founder of InspireMeToday.com. He's also a 2-yr old Samoyed pup.

If today were my last day on Earth and I could share 500 words of brilliance with the world, here are the important things I'd want to pass along to others...

From watching Koda for the last two years, these are things that he would share with you if he could write....

You'll get much more from tail wags and licks than you ever will from barks and bites.

Be persistent and you'll usually get what you want.

If we weren't supposed to play in mud puddles they wouldn't exist.

Happiness and love are the only things that matter.

Few things in life are as good as a long cool drink of water or a back rub.

When someone tells you "You're beautiful", just smile, knowing they're really seeing a part of themselves in you.

Knowing that all of the answers to all life's questions are already inside us all, sometimes silence really is the best answer.

Honor our differences. Just because I run after a stick doesn't mean I'm going to bring it back anymore than you could expect a retriever to pull a sled. Recognize and appreciate our individual talents.

Enthusiasm can overcome fear in almost any situation.

Don't worry about what you look like, ever. Just be you.

Play until you're too tired to play anymore. It's what life's all about.

It's great to lead but don't forget to wait and help those behind you too.

Toys don't have to be expensive. The right stick can be the greatest find of the day.

Give back the love that's given to you.

Exercise is an important part of life if you don't want to feel old and achey.

When another dog barks at you, you have a choice whether to bark back or not.

Throw away the leash! Think without boundaries. Dream without limitations. Life is lived more fully when you play without fences.

The tone of your voice is much more important than any words you could possibly say.

All people, no matter who they are or what they look like, should be greeted with an enthusiastic tail wag.

Everyone is just looking for love and someone to scratch them behind the ears.

When someone who loves you calls your name, run to them with the greatest enthusiasm, knowing that just by showing up, you'll make them smile.

Don't cry today over yesterday's lost bones.

Keep it simple. Eat, sleep, play, chew bones and love.

Worry is something I just don't understand. It steals the moment and playing is just more fun.

You can tell a lot about someone from just one sniff.

Forgive in the moment so you don't have to remember stuff that doesn't matter anyway.

Mud on your feet just means you had a good day.

No hill is too high to climb if the adventure is exciting enough.

Nothing beats a good tummy rub.

Share tail wags with everyone. You may be the only one to give love to a stranger today.

Chasing deer is more fun than chasing cats. Make your own trail and do what you want to do.

Eat when you're hungry, don't eat when you're not and you'll be healthy and maintain the perfect weight.

The best place to be is walking along side of someone you love.

Nap when you're sleepy and play when you're not. Spend your energy doing things that you love.

Love and protect those around you.

Kisses and affection are always appropriate.

It's always good to have a friend who can scratch the places you can't reach and pull the burrs from your fur when you need a little help.

"NO!" isn't a fun word.

Poking your nose in places where it doesn't belong (like bee's nests) can result in painful consequences.

Today could be your last day, so don't waste time burying your bones- enjoy them now.

When you show gratitude for the treats in your life you get more of them.

No matter the season, no matter the reason, love is always the answer.

And, love isn't really love unless it's unconditional.

<![CDATA[Pet Friendly Traveling]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/pet-friendly-traveling/ Do you dread leaving your pet when you go on vacation? Take your pet with you. Traveling with your pet has gotten a lot easier.

Many airlines and hotels have become pet friendly. Googling pet friendly lodging generates a list of inns, hotels and resorts where dogs, cats and other pets are welcome. Telephone the hotel before you make a reservation to confirm your pet will be welcome and to ensure the setting is safe.

A few of the conveniences hotels offer to dog owners include leashes, bowls and dog beds to use during your stay. Just don't order room service for yourself, add a special pet meal for your best buddy! Hang the Do Not Disturb sign on the door when you are out of the room, so your pet will not be startled if a hotel employee enters the room.

There are many options for flying with your pet. Pets must be in an airline approved crate or carrier for the durations of the flight. Dogs up to 12 lbs can travel in a stylish Gray Pet Messenger Bag. It is Airline carry-on approved with mesh windows on both sides with one large zip down mesh opening in front. The zippered supply pocket on front, cell phone holder on lower strap and a pet waste bag dispenser provides comfort and convenience in one. Large dogs have to be checked in as luggage and flown in the cargo area of the plane.

It sounds sad to have to check your pet in as luggage and have them travel in the cargo area of the plane. Pet owners can choose to mildly sedate a dog, so they sleep the whole flight. Airlines tend to take good care of pets, realizing they are as near and dear to us as our children.

Traveling by car is always an option. If your car is not roomy enough to comfortably fit your family and your dog, rental cars are an option. Car rental companies like Budget and Avis allow pets in their vehicles and don't charge fees as long as there is no damage to the vehicle.

Public transportation allows service pets, however rules and restrictions apply to bringing dogs and cats on local transit systems. Each state has their own rules which apply to taking pets on the subway. Small pets in carriers are permitted on subways in many, but not all states. Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses do not allow pets.

Allow extra travel time when traveling with your pet. Water and walks will be needed. The best of times is when everyone is making memories together.

<![CDATA[Dog Hair Needs Dog Shampoo!]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/dog-hair-needs-dog-shampoo/ Does your dog like to roll in deer, geese and dog poop? Dogs usually like to rub the scent into the hair around their neck, I assume so they can easily waft the odor. This instinctive behavior makes every dog owner cringe and shout out, "Stop rolling in THAT!"

Most dogs don't get too excited when they are about to get a bath. Actually, most dogs really don't like getting a bath. Bathing a dog too often will dry out their coat and skin. Depending on the dogs activities and dog breed determines how often a bath is necessary.

Daily brushing will help keep your dog clean between baths. Using the appropriate grooming brush stimulates your dog's scalp, which benefits the skin, undercoat and overall pet coat. The Oval Shedding Slicker Pet Brush is designed to remove all dead hair and is suitable for all coat types: long-haired; wire & course-hair; short & smooth-hair breeds. Brushing your pet can also be a wonderful bonding experience.

Using the correct dog shampoo is essential in keeping your pet's skin and coat healthy. When a shampoo is soothing, especially for dogs with sensitive skin, the bathing experience will be better for the dog and the bather. Pet shampoo is formulated for the pH of dog's skin. The skin pH level of a human is more acidic than dog skin; therefore your shampoo could irritate your dogs' skin.

There is a pet shampoo for all types of pet coats and skin sensitivities. Tearless, whitening, deodorizing, sensitive skin, flea and tick …. even waterless shampoo is available to keep a dog clean and smelling fresh. Cucumber Melon 12 oz Dog Shampoo & 4 oz Daily Spritz from nootie comes in a combination shampoo & daily spritz bottle. Your dog will smell fresh everyday! A homemade dog shampoo using dish soap, apple cider vinegar, glycerin and water works great for most breeds.

Apple cider vinegar mixed with warm water is also an effective rinse to restore the ph balance of your dog's skin after a shampoo. In addition to treating hot spots, apple cider vinegar also treats ringworm, fleas, ticks and other skin conditions. Since we are talking about the benefits of apple cider vinegar, a splash in the dog's water bowl helps keep the digestive system balanced. Yeah ACV!

Whether you use a store bought dog shampoo or use a homemade shampoo, be sure to rinse all the shampoo out. When soap ingredients dry on the skin they tend to cause irritation and itchiness. After your dog has finished shaking, an old t-shirt works well to massage and dry off your dog.

Dogs tend to be outside often during the summer months. They perspire and inevitably roll, sit or lay in dirt. The summer time baths can turn into pleasant experiences by using the pet shampoo that is right for your dog!

<![CDATA[Fetch the Ball – Catch the Frisbee]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/fetch-the-ball-catch-the-frisbee/ Some dogs are obsessed with balls. They can chase a ball for hours and hours. Drop the ball for a drink of water, then walk around or lie down with the ball in their mouth and wait for someone to play fetch. One of Jake's Dog House's favorite balls is made by Orbee. The Planet Dog virtually indestructible ball is made from 100-Percent recycled material ... Reuse, Reduce, REWOOF!

Some dogs will look at the ball as it rolls by with little or no interest. They will look and see who threw the ball and hope they don't do it again. A bouncing ball can be disturbing, if you're not in the mood!

For many dogs, fetch is an instinctual trick. A dog owner throws a ball or dog toy and your dog will return it and do all over again. Herding dogs and retrievers tend to enjoy fetching a ball and many are also quite talented in catching a Frisbee as well. Actually the correct name is Disc Dogs.

The Border Collie and German Shorthaired Pointer are two of the best Disc dogs. They have a sharp alertness that helps to estimate the path of the Frisbee. Disc Dogs are skilled with the physical agility to easily jump to catch a Frisbee in mid air.

A dog doesn't have to be a pure bred or come from a line of disc dogs to be an accomplished disc dog. Many mixed breeds, dogs from animal shelters and rescue groups have been trained to be World Champion disc dogs. In many cases, dogs have overcome abandonment, aggression and various trauma issues via their disc training.

Steps to training a dog to play fetch can be a dog owner/dog bonding experience. Begin by throwing a ball or favorite dog toy and running with your dog to retrieve it. Sometimes dogs need a little extra coaxing. Putting a dog treat inside the ball adds a little incentive to fetch the ball. When your dog picks up the ball take the dog treat out of the slit and reward your dog with the treat, words of praise and a belly rub.

Using a Frisbee as a food and/or water bowl is a subtle way of making your dog comfortable with a disc. Begin throwing the Frisbee in the air next to your dog. Do not reward your dog with a treat unless the disc is caught in the air. Fetch is retrieving an object from the ground, catching a Frisbee in the air requires different training and rewarding.

Dog training, whether fetch or disc training requires trust. Never throw a ball or disc directly at your dog. Playing ball and Frisbee is great exercise and skill training for dogs. It also brings dogs and their owners closer together through lots of attention, praise and treats.

<![CDATA[Walk Your Dog with A SPRING In Your Step!]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/walk-your-dog-with-a-spring-in-your-step/ The clocks have been changed … spring ahead! Just the sound of SPRING AHEAD sounds energizing! Come out of hibernation and get outside and enjoy the daylight.

Enjoy those outdoor walks again. As we shed layers of heavy clothing, remember that some short hair breeds still need a dog sweater on chilly mornings and during evening walks.

Responsible dog owners clean up after their pets. A great Spring Ahead resolution is to use eco-friendly biodegradable poop bags. Clean Go Pet Biodegradable Dog Waste Bags are biodegradable dog waste bags made from a corn-based plastic that will naturally decompose after use. Unscented leak proof bags have quick-tie handles to seal in odors.

Cleaning up the dog poop in your backyard on a regular schedule can prevent attracting maggots and parasites. Dog poop can present a health risk, especially if you have a dog who likes to eat poop. Rakes and shovels or poop scoops get the job quickly.

Poop Scooping has also emerged as a profitable business. Does it get any easier to have someone come to your home and pick up all the dog poop on your property? Voila! A dog friendly yard!

Being outdoors replenishes our energy level. Dogs enjoy being outside in the yard while their owner is cleaning up the winter debris and planting gardens. A little sunshine and exercise does wonders for humans and canines alike!

Some pet owners train their dogs to stay in a certain section of their yard. This helps prevent brown spots on the grass and trampled gardens. It also assures dog owners with small children that there is a clean area of the yard for their children to play.

Happy Spring! Enjoy the crocus and daffodils and additional hours of daylight. Best of all, get out there and CHASE A SQUIRREL!

<![CDATA[Paddy Wack Give Your Dog a GREEN Bone]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/paddy-wack-give-your-dog-a-green-bone/ Roll over Clover. It's time to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Irish Dog Breeds are popular not only on the Emerald Isle, but all over the world.

Back in the day of St. Patrick the dogs of Ireland were hunting and sporting dogs. The popular Irish breeds that have evolved through generations include the Irish Setter, Irish Wolfhound, Irish Water Spaniel, Irish Terrier, Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier, Kerry Blue Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Irish Red & White Setter and Kerry Beagle.

Mixed breed dogs, also known today as Hybrid dogs, are a combination of two or more purebred dogs. The hybrid dogs, such as the Golden Irish, have the traits and personality of both the Irish Setter and a Golden Retriever. Another common hybrid is the Irish Doodle, which is a mix of a Standard Poodle and an Irish Setter.

Many Irish dogs have Irish names. The Galelic name, Madigan, (pronounced MAD i gan) and Madden, (pronounced MAD din) translates as little dog. Anlan, (pronounced ON lin) translates as great hound. Mac is the Gaelic term for son, and some Irish owners use this as a prefix in their dog's name, such as Mac Cutie.

If you happen to be the proud dog owner of an Irish breed, part of loving and caring for your Irish dog is celebrating their heritage with them. St. Patrick's Day is celebrated March 17th by the Irish and non Irish all around the world. Parades, Irish food and wearing green are some of the festivities of the day.

Potato dog treats and lamb stew are tasty ways to taste the roots of Ireland. Potatoes are about as Irish as you can get and are one of the staples of the Irish diet. Avoderm Potato all natural dog treats are crunchy oven-baked treats your dog will love. During the festivities dogs can also sink their teeth into a lamb filled rawhide.

At the crack o' dawn when your Irish pup is ready to play, remember their rolling green hills of their native land and play with eco-friendly toys. GO GREEN on St. Patrick's Day and every day. Paw Planet Bone with Rope Eco-Friendly Dog Toy Natural chew toy is made with pure natural materials and unbleached linen, cotton rope and sisal filling. Eco-friendly, durable and interactive fun!

Irish dogs have emerged from a hard working breed residing in Ireland to a wonderful family dog to many dog owners around the world. With their natural affection and loyalty, Irish Breeds are wonderful human companions.

<![CDATA[Teaching Your Dog Right from Wrong]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/teaching-your-dog-right-from-wrong/ Where do dogs learn their manners? From their owners! Dogs are pack animals and it is important for a dog owner to be the pack leader.

Having a happy and properly socialized pet requires teaching and guidance from the pet's owner. Whether you have a puppy or adopt a dog, a relationship of trust should start as early as possible.

Training requires a disciplined and patient dog owner. It is easy to cave in when your dog just wants your attention and doesn't want to listen to your commands. Reward your dog for good behavior. Positive reinforcement is more effective than punishment. Physical punishment will make your dog afraid of you and break down the trust you are trying to establish.

Housebreaking is one of the first aspects involved in dog training. With a 95% success rate Poochie-Bells are recommended by professional trainers. No more whining, barking or waiting by the door, your pooch can be trained to ring the bells when they need to go outside. The bells are strategically placed on a heavy duty designer durable grosgrain ribbon to accommodate small and large breeds. Poochie Bells are portable, there are no batteries or wires so dog owners can remain consistent with housebreaking wherever you and your pooch happen to be.

Some dog breeds are more difficult to train than others. There are breed specific behaviors that need to be adapted to their environment. Herding and excessive barking are natural instincts that dog trainers and owners need to modify for a dog to adapt in their environment and home.

Barking is an instinctive behavior for dogs. When a dog hears an unfamiliar noise, sees a stranger, or hears a knock or doorbell they tend to begin barking. It is their way of communicating what they hear. Some hunting breeds like a Beagle or Terrier tend to bark more than other docile dogs.

Excessive barking is an unwanted behavior that requires attention. Dogs usually bark in a standing or sitting position. Command your dog to lie down and the barking should subside. Dogs don't tend to bark when they are lying down. The command "ENOUGH" spoken in a firm tone also informs the dog to stop barking.

Training a dog can seem overwhelming. The dog owner's role as the pack leader is based on mutual trust. When the trust is established a dog will look to their owner for behavior cues. A dog wants to please their owner and responds to positive reinforcement when they behave appropriately.

<![CDATA[Sleeping like a Dog]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/sleeping-like-a-dog/ Do you like to sleep? Then a dog's life is for you! Dogs sleep about 12 hours a day, every day. They sleep almost half their life.

Dogs sleep out of boredom. Some dog's sleeping habits influence its behavior. Stimulation during the day is necessary for some dogs that need to be awake during the day so they can sleep at night; at the same time as their owners.

Even though a dog sleeps for 12 hours or more a day, they are still aware of their surroundings. If it is not time for a walk, pet, play or food, dogs tend to sleep. Sometimes they are tired, especially after an afternoon at the dog park and other times its just boredom.

Talking to a sleeping dog, saying their name or saying, do you want to go for walk, is a safe way to wake a sleeping dog. Touching them, can startle them and cause an unwanted behavior.

Did you ever have a hard time keeping your eyes open? Dogs are smart and just give in to the fatigue. One moment they are sitting next to you and the next their eyes are rolling in their lids and they are dreaming.

Usually a dog starts falling asleep on their side or belly with their legs stretched out. When they start falling into a deeper sleep they roll over on their back. In this position a dog is completely stretched out and relaxed. Their legs are straight up in the air and their belly is nice and cool.

Have a clean and comfortable place in your home where your dog can rest feeling safe and secure. It is their natural instinct to be in a sheltered place, under a table or in a corner. Before a dog lies down, they circle the spot they intend to lay down to sleep. Snoozer® Camel Microsuede/Sherpa Cozy Cave Dog Bed is a comfortable soft berber dog bed that caters to the sheltered instinct.

Dog owners may not get 12 hours of sleep each day, but we can learn from our pet's nature to slow down and more often. Stretch out, release your tension and SNORE!

<![CDATA[Causes of Dog Tear Stains]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/causes-of-dog-tear-stains/ We all strive to look our best. There are cosmetic remedies and prescription medicines for dark circles and puffy eyes. The same is true for dogs that have reddish-brown stains under their eyes.

Tear stains are apparent on white and light hair dogs. Brown, black and dogs with darker hair and fur experience tear staining also; it just is not that noticeable because it is camouflaged by their coloring. Light or dark coated, not all dogs experience tear staining.

There are many reasons why a dog has tear stains. It is trial and error to figure out which is causing the problem in your dog. Every dog has a different chemical makeup and lives in a different environment; therefore the eye stain culprit can vary from dog to dog.

Some dogs just have good genes, at least in the tear staining category. Veterinarians suggest that eye structure is the source of the problem. A sinus condition can lead to excessive tearing. The sinuses are connected to eyes, ears, nose and fluid blockage and inadequate draining can lead to infections.

Fleas tend to congregate around the eyes where it is warm and moist. They irritate a dog's eyes and leave their red feces under the dogs' eyes. Fleas also carry mites, which cause ear infections that also create excessive eye tearing and staining.

A Veterinarian can help diagnose the cause of excessive eye tearing and staining. Vets can determine if your dog has clogged tear ducts, ear infections or irritating eye lashes that are causing your dog's eye to tear. Treating an ear infection or unclogging an eye duct via eye irrigation can be medically necessary. If there is a severe eye condition a Veterinary Opthalmologist might be required to treat your dog's condition.

Good hygiene is important for every pet. However it can also play a simple role in keeping eye stains under control. Routine baths with a flea shampoo and washing your dogs face daily can make a significant difference.

Keeping dirt and hair out of your dog's eyes and staying alert of any changes like excessive licking, or goopy eye conditions is the best way to keep your pet's eyes healthy. Seek advice from a Veterinarian and/or dog groomer about treating the sensitive eye area.

<![CDATA[Diet Reflects a Dog’s Health]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/diet-reflects-a-dogs-health/ Deciding what kind of dog food and dog treats are appropriate for your dog is as important as deciding what to feed your family. Reading ingredient labels to stay aware of recalls is necessary to insure your pet is receiving safe and healthy meals.

Recent recalls include peanut butter dog treats. Not all manufacturers were affected by this recall. Claudia's Canine Cuisine and Northern Biscuit Company are examples of dog treat manufacturers whose products were not affected by the peanut butter recall. Thankfully the contaminated peanut butter products were taken off the shelves and the recall is over.

As dogs age their metabolism slows down. Sound familiar? Older dogs require special diets. Veterinarians suggest a diet high in fiber and complex carbohydrates and low in fat for dogs who don't engage in an active lifestyle. There are many brands of dog food specific for aging dogs such as Merrick 5-Star Dry Dog Food Senior Medley. Fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, no animal fat and real meat make Senior Medley an appropriate choice for senior dogs.

Diabetes also affects dogs and requires special care to keep glucose levels in an appropriate range. High fiber diets are recommended for diabetic dogs. The added fiber slows the digestion of carbohydrates and regulates breaking down the carbs.

Many aging dogs and large breed dogs like a Labrador Retriever, Gordon Setter, Irish Setter and Great Dane suffer from arthritis. Arthritis symptoms may increase with age or develop the joint pain and stiffness during old age. Dogswell Happy Hips dog treats with Glucosamine & Chondroitin are not only nutritious all natural chicken breasts, but also scientifically formulated to help maintain the physical condition of a dog's joints.

Food allergies are common among many breeds of dogs. Wheat, corn and soy can cause itchy skin, skin and ear infections, excessive scratching, hot spots, hair loss, and frequent bowel movements in a dog with an allergy to these products.

Overweight dogs need to be on a special diet. If a dog is eating table scraps too may dog treats, and not getting enough exercise they will become overweight. This happens frequently when a dog is in a crate during the day and then spoiled all evening with love and food.

Caring for your dog from puppy to senior is an educational process. During each stage there are nutritional requirements that need to be met so your dog will be healthy and have the wonderful life every dog deserves!

<![CDATA[Dog Toys to Fit Your Lifestyle]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/dog-toys-to-fit-your-lifestyle/ Dog Playing With Dog ToyWhat does a dog find entertaining about a dog toy? Is it the squeak, the texture, the size? Every dog has their preference, and just like their human counterparts one day a soft plush toy is fun and another day a hard rubber chew toy is the toy of choice.

Do you think a dog really prefers one toy over another or do they choose the first toy they see? Is it tug-a-war time or comfort time with a soft plush dog toy? Sometimes it is difficult to predict which toy a dog will choose.

Plush dog toys with squeakers seem to satisfy a dog in several ways. They like the soft feel of the plush and the instant gratification of the squeaker. It also draws attention to the playful pup – letting you know its playtime!

Kong Dog ToyHaving something to sink their teeth into, aka chewing, keeps dogs busy for a long time. Putting a dog treat inside a KONG toy is the ultimate entertainment; however a dog toy shouldn't always be centered on a treat. Weight issue can occur if treats are part of daily play.

Dog Breeds like, Labrador Retrievers and Border Collies take pleasure in chasing a ball! What a great form of exercise and quality time play. Veterinarians recommend hard rubber balls, rather than tennis balls. Tennis balls tend to get covered with dirt and sand and grind away dog's teeth.

Portuguese Water Dogs, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels and Newfoundland breeds enjoy water toys. Taking a dive for a floating neoprene toy, while splashing around is an awesome activity for these breeds.

Dogs like durable tug dog toys because they are interactive toys. Who is stronger, you or your pup? It is a showdown of strength! With practice or a bit of trickery we can take possession of the rope toy!

Depending on the activity and interaction can determine the favorite dog toy of the hour. Signs that you are headed to play ball or out to the lake creates so much stimulation that a dog will grab the ball or water toy in anticipation of leaving as soon as possible. What smart animals!

<![CDATA[Jake’s Dog House Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/jakes-dog-house-top-10-new-years-resolutions/ 1. Healthy Food Choices: This means eating foods without a lot of preservatives, fillers and artificial colors and flavor. Dog owners would not feel well if they ate an overly processed diet. Dog food differs, read the labels to be sure you are feeding your dog well balanced and nutritious meals. For example, Merrick and Solid Gold dog treats contain all natural and holistic ingredients and do not contain any chemical preservatives.

2. Help Others: Dog s can brighten a human's day. Visiting the elderly, walking your apprehensive child to the bus stop & waiting anxiously for the bus to arrive … dogs have many comforting attributes that can aid the community.

3. Learn a New Trick: If your dog has mastered sit & stay, how about a new trick, like run upstairs and get my slippers. Even adult dogs can learn new tricks. A dog training class or a dog owner with a bag of dog treats might accomplish a new dog trick. Dog Brick Interactive Game Dog Toy is a great way to stimulate your dogs learning skills. The Dog Brick game requires a dog to first dislodge the removable bones, then to push the sliding covers and access hidden treats. The level of difficulty for the Brick can be varied, depending upon the dog's experience and his enthusiasm for the game … and you thought Sudoku strengthened the mind!

4. Exercise: Some dogs love to run and chase balls, but don't always have the opportunity, especially during the winter months. Dog parks are open year round. Bundle up, grab a ball and get some dog socialization at the dog park. Smaller dogs can benefit from a daily walk. This is also a great way for a dog owner to stay fit!

5. Quality Time: Most dogs are known for their Love and Loyalty. Hugs, a good belly rub and endearing words validate your adoring relationship.

6. Role Model: Clean up after your dog. This includes picking up dog poop at the dog park, on walks and in your backyard too. A responsible dog owner respects our environment.

7. Read: Knowledge is power! Sometimes reading aloud to someone who loves the sound of your voice encourages the reader to do better in school.

8. Be Happier: Engage in activities that make you smile. Spend time doing something that makes you feel good about yourself. Does watching your dog's tail wag or listening to your dog squeal with delight when you call their name make you feel awesome?

9. Sleep: Who knows more about sleep than your dog? Dogs recognize the need for resting your weary bones. A nap does wonders to catch a second wind before settling down for a good 8 hours each night.

Christmas Dog

by Shel Silverstein

Tonight's my first night as a watchdog, And here it is Christmas Eve. The children are sleeping all cozy upstairs, While I'm guardin' the stockin's and tree.

What's that now---footsteps on the rooftop? Could it be a cat or a mouse? Who's this down the chimney? A thief with a beard--- And a big sack for robbin' the house?

I'm barkin', I'm growlin', I'm bitin' his butt. He howls and jumps back in his sleigh. I scare his strange horses, they leap in the air. I've frightened the whole bunch away.

Now the house is all peaceful and quiet again. The stockin's are safe as can be. Won't the kiddies be glad when they wake up tomorrow And see how I've guarded the tree.

<![CDATA[Canine Influenza]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/canine-influenza/ The Flu and the Swine Flu have been the hot topic during the last few months. Dogs are not exempt from catching the flu. Canine Influenza is an A H3N8 influenza virus that has been known to exist in horses for more than 40 years. In 2004, however, cases of an unknown respiratory illness in dogs (initially greyhounds) were reported. This virus has spread to dogs and can now spread between dogs.

Because this flu virus is new to dogs, most dogs will not have a natural immunity. The signs of canine flu are similar to kennel cough, with a thick nasal discharge and mild low grade fever.

Canine influenza is spread by airborne discharge and contaminated surfaces. The virus can stay alive on surfaces for up to 48 hours, on clothing for 24 hours, and on hands for 12 hours. Therefore kennels, crates, food and water bowls, collars and leashes and people moving between infected and uninfected dogs have ample time to spread the virus.

There are similar respiratory infections that mimic the Dog Flu. Two blood samples can confirm canine influenza. One blood sample is drawn while the dog is sick and the second 2 to 3 weeks later.

There is a Canine Influenza Vaccine, H3N8 which has proven to reduce the occurrence and severity of lung lesions, as well as the duration of coughing and the overall virus. The vaccine is made from inactivated virus and is administered by an injection in two doses, two to four weeks apart. The Canine Flu vaccine may be given to dogs six weeks of age or older and can be given annually for Flu protection. Dog owners should seek advice from with their veterinarian to determine whether the vaccine is appropriate for their dog.

Currently, there is no evidence that humans can catch canine influenza virus from dogs. There are no known cases of humans infected with the canine influenza virus. This virus infects dogs and spreads between dogs.

Just like the Swine Flu and the Seasonal Flu, it is likely that the Dog Flu will continue to spread. Taking precautions and taking proper care of your pet, should keep your dog healthy during this flu season. There is no need for alarm and avoiding dog parks, kennels, grooming or other places you typically take your dog. Reputable Pet Professionals keep their establishments sanitized and are aware of unhealthy symptoms of their clients.

For more information on Canine Influenza, check out these 2 websites: Dr. Cynda Crawford (University of Florida) at www.canineflu.org and information from the American Veterinary Medical Association at www.avma.org.

<![CDATA[Say 'No' to Dog Breath!]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/say-no-to-dog-breath/ Dog KissEveryone loves puppy kisses, but nobody loves puppy breath! A wagging tail, panting and squealing with delight. then, a big, wet dog kiss ! – By now you've gotten a whiff of "dog breath"!

Remember this famous Peanuts quote: Auugh! I've been kissed by a dog! I have dog germs! Get some hot water! Get some disinfectant! Get some iodine! As spoken by none other than Lucy Van Pelt!

Dog breath has a bad reputation! Humans with terrible oral hygiene habits have bad breath too! The first step to help with unpleasant pet breath is to keep your dog's teeth clean. A yearly professional cleaning by your veterinarian will scrape built on plaque and tarter off your dog's teeth and along the gum line. If you start oral hygiene when your pet is young, you can train them to tolerate having their teeth brushed by you. This is will help fight tartar and gum disease between yearly veterinarian cleanings.

An easy solution to brushing your dog's teeth at home is ClearQuest Pet Toothbrush and Toothpaste Set. The double-sided toothbrush has a small and large head for complete cleaning. Tartar-control toothpaste is flavored with vanilla and has tea tree oil for gum health. Non-foaming toothpaste requires no rinsing. Don't use your toothpaste to brush your dog's teeth. Human toothpaste can be harmful to a dog.

Bad breath could indicate dangerous conditions that need more attention than just giving your dog a breath freshener. Have your veterinarian rule out gum disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or a foreign object trapped in your dog's mouth. Periodontal disease can lead to heart problems. The bacteria in the tartar can get into the bloodstream through infected gums. Bacteria can attach in the heart and cause a life-threatening disease. It is important to your dog's health to keep your their teeth and gums clean.

Some groomers recommend giving your dog carrots to help with bad breath. An apple a day also helps for a short period of time. Dog owners can easily make Homemade Dog Breath Mints. It is very simple, only 3 ingredients.

1/4 cup mint leaves 3-5 salt-free crackers or matzo or breadcrumbs Water

1. Crush crackers 2. Finely chop mint leaves 3. Mix chopped mint with crackers 4. Add water to mint and crackers until mixture is sticks together 5. Form into 1/4 inch balls. 6. Place into freezer on waxed paper 7. Serve to your dogs when needed

One of Jake's Dog House best selling products is Petkin Liquid Oral Care. Liquid Oral Care provides an easy way to keep your pet's teeth and gums clean and healthy while freshening their breath. Simply add Liquid Oral Care to your pet's daily drinking water. The virtually tasteless and colorless formula works invisibly to clean teeth while fighting plaque, gum disease and odor causing germs. A 32oz bottle.retails typically for $12.95

Dog toys help reduce bad dog breath. Nylabone Galileo dog bone has tiny bristle like projections that are raised during normal chewing which help to clean teeth and massage the gums. Rope dog toys act as dental floss to keep rub away plaque and tarter. Tough, solid rubber dog toys like KONG dental stick is made from flexible, durable KONG natural rubber and not only satisfies your dog's natural urge to chew, but cleans their teeth while your dog plays!

Chase annoying bad breath away with a good dental plan of brushing your dog's teeth, yearly visits to the Vet, and breath fresheners made for pets! Using oral care products that are especially formulated to help you in taking care of your dog's oral hygiene will keep your dog healthy and happy and make dog kisses delightful!

<![CDATA[Tips on House Training Your Dog]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/tips-on-house-training-your-dog/ House Breaking your DogWe all want the perfect pet. How about a dog who is house broken and doesn't have accidents in the house? Some adopted and rescued dogs are already house trained and just need to get acclimated to their new home and routine and some dogs, namely puppies, and a few small breeds need constant attention to teach them to let you know when they need to, "go out".

Getting a puppy is very exciting! Playing and cuddling with your precious new addition is what puppy love is all about. Teaching your puppy the house rules is another story! The house rule is, No Peeing or Pooping in the House!

Sometimes this is easier said than done. A puppy needs to learn that the appropriate location to "go potty" is outside. Many pet owners use Nature's Miracle Puppy Training Pads to assist in the training process. The training pads are treated with a fresh grass scent to train dogs to "go" outside faster! A dog attractant "Go Here" pheromones scent is detected only by dogs which attracts them to the pads. The training pads absorb up to 100 times its volume in liquid, making it one of the most absorbent pads and also eliminates the toughest pet odors. Placing these highly absorbent pads near the door makes housetraining your puppy quicker and easier.

Once your dog knows to go near the door when they have to go to the bathroom, eliminate the whining, barking or waiting by the door! Poochie-Bells have a 95% success rate and are easy to use to quickly train your pooch to ring the bells when he needs to go outside. The reinforced bells are extra smooth, snapped & looped safely into place so that they won't be pulled or fall off the heavy duty designer durable grosgrain ribbon. The bells are strategically placed for training small and large breeds. Poochie Bells are recommended by professional trainers.

All good dogs deserve a reward. When your dog gets the hang of letting you know it is time to go out - a dog treat is necessary to reinforce the good behavior. One of Jake's favorite dog training treats are 100% Pure Dehydrated Pork Liver Treats. Even the most fussy dogs love the bite sized, all natural dog snack. Jakes Teddy Training Dog Treats contain no fillers, additives or preservatives. An all around great reward!

During the housebreaking process, accidents will happen. Dog owners get frustrated when you just took your puppy outside and as soon as you get back inside he pees on the carpet. UGH! One of the best-known enzymatic stain and odor removers on the market is Advanced Formula Natures Miracle Pet Odor Stain Remover. It eliminates urine odors completely with no perfume cover-up odor. It is safe for use around children and pets and on colors because it's non-toxic, non-flammable, non-caustic and non-acid.

Love and Patience are essential for house breaking your dog. The ideal puppy is sleeping in your lap and looking adorable and in a few weeks will communicate with you when they need to go out to do their business. House breaking is just the beginning to teaching a dog to respect you and your home.

<![CDATA[Dogs Need Coats Too!]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/dogs-need-coats-too/ Dog Coats and SweatersThe days are getting chilly. Time to pull out the coats and sweaters and turn on the heater! Even though dogs come with their own coats, they could use extra warmth provided by a dog coat or dog sweater.

Dog owners enjoy dressing up small dogs. Smaller breed dogs have hair rather than fur and are sensitive to chilly weather. They need the warmth of dog clothes if they are outside for any length of time. Dog breeds such as: Yorkshire Terriers, Silky Terriers, Chinese Crested Dogs, Dachshunds and Maltese truly benefit from wearing a dog sweater or coat. Little dogs don't like the feel of the cold or rain and are happiest warm and dry.

Smaller/Medium size dogs such as Pugs and Welsh Corgis have shorthair, but a more muscular build than teacup and small dogs. But wouldn't a Welsh Corgi just be so righteous in a Velour Prince or Princess Royalty Hoodie? If they are spending the day with the Queen a plaid trench coat would be perfect. How about a pug in a Faux Brown Leather Bomber Jacket? Sometimes it is just about looking good! Even though Boxers are muscular they don't fare well in extreme temperatures. Couldn't you see a Boxer wearing a Corduroy Dog Jacket?

Short haired breeds, like a Basenji, Italian Greyhound, Greyhound, Weimaraner and Vizsla have a thin build and need to exercise outdoors. They do not fare well with the extreme cold. During cold temperatures a barn jacket is easy to Velcro onto an active dog. A Barn Coat helps to keep outdoor dogs comfortable in cold weather. The Polyester side helps repel wind and water to keep dogs dry and safe from the elements, while the soft fleece side traps body heat to provide a den of snuggly comfort.

Some dog breeds don't need to wear a coat. For example, the Alaskan Malamute has a dense and wooly undercoat that enables them to be exposed to the frigid cold weather without wearing a coat. The Samoyed has a double coat that consists of a soft, thick undercoat and a harsh outer coat. Cold temperature breeds also have a ruff of hair around their neck for extra insulation. Some DO like it cold!

Aging dogs need a bit of extra comfort and warmth in their old age. A fleece lined dog coat will keep an older dog more comfortable. Especially on days when a dog feels arthritic, a dog sweater or coat will offer aid to keep their bodies at ease. Dogs not in tip top health can benefit from a therapeutic dog coat. Using heat, cold and magnetic therapy, veterinarians recommend therapeutic dog coats for rehabilitation and pain relief.

The right fit is important for comfort and warmth. Using a tape measure to figure out what size coat your dog will need can be accomplished in 3 easy steps.

1. Measure your dog's girth. The girth is the dog's chest behind the front legs. 2. Measure your dog's neck. This is an important for hooded dog apparel. 3. Measure the length of your dog from the base of their neck to the base of their tail.

Yes, dogs come with their own coats, but depending upon the breed, the size, and the weather a dog coat can add an extra bit of warm for cold and damp days.

<![CDATA[Selecting a Dog Collar]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/selecting-a-dog-collar/ A dog collar serves the purpose of holding a dog id tag and something to attach a leash to. The bare essentials of a dog collar offers safety and convenience for the dog and responsible dog owner.

There are numerous reasons to choose a dog collar. Training and behavior modification, and of course fashion are key components in selecting the dog collar that perfectly suits you and your pet. The decision can be overwhelming since there are several styles like choke and martingale dog collars and fashion/everyday dog collars. Dog collars also are made in a variety of materials like leather, nylon, bling/rhinestones, ribbon, cotton, plastic and cloth.

For the majority of dogs, the correct way to size a dog collar is to measure the dog's neck and add two inches. When a dog is wearing a collar you should be able to fit two fingers between the dog's neck and the dog collar. A proper fit is important for safety and comfort.

Dog owners usually use a choke chain dog collar to train a medium to large dog. The choke dog collar teaches a dog to walk on a leash and to heel. A dog is corrected with a quick tug-and-release on the dog leash, which tightens the choke collar, then releases the pressure on the dogs neck.

A martingale collar is used for dogs that bow their heads and try to slip the collar off, known as backing out of the dog collar! The martingale dog collar is similar to a choke dog collar, except that the collar won't continue to tighten and a dog cannot wriggle out of the dog collar.

Fashion dog collars come in abundant styles. Jake's Dog House, houses dog collars for every pet and pet owner's wants and needs. For example: Get your dog in the game! Put your favorite, college, NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL dog collar on your best buddy. NASCAR, seasonal designs, hobbies and trendy designs, there is a dog collar for every occasion! These dog collars are for everyday wear or changed frequently to celebrate holidays like Christmas, Jewish Holidays and Easter. Top designers have even created dog collars for the pup that has it all! Colors and widths vary for fashion and comfort.

Dog collars are a fun pet accessory to express your dog's personality. They also are excellent for dog training. Be sure your dog's collar has an id tag with your up to date contact information.

<![CDATA[Don't Just Be A Dog Owner, Be A Dog Person!]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/be-a-dog-person/ Do you talk to your dog? Carry a picture of your dog in your wallet or have dog pictures in your cell phone? Do you tell tales of what your dogs have done or plan to do? Is the first thing you do when you walk into your home is pet and hug your dog? The passionate relationship between a dog person and their dog is similar to a parent/child/best friend relationship. Who are dog people?

Groom Room

They are not just dog owners; they are people who understand dogs and can't imagine a world without a dog as part of it. Jeane Stein, President of Jake's Dog House is a hard core dog person. Every dog she encounters throughout her day receives a genuine warm greeting. Dogs react to her voice with tail wagging excitement! Friends and Family member's pets actually squeal with delight as their car pulls into Jeane's driveway! Jeane often bathes the dogs in Jake's Dog House Groom Room, so she can get to know Jake's client's pets.

Dogs can sense a dog person. Security, boundaries, and the basic needs of food and shelter are the responsibilities of a dog owner. A dog person adds loyalty and a friendship and unconditional love to the package. Affection in the form of petting, talking to your dog, taking them along in the car and including them in your day to day activities creates a strong bond.

The dog person's dog does not reside in a backyard doghouse. They sleep in the master bedroom. Some sleep in the king sized bed or have a bed of their own. Lazy Paws builds Canopy Dog Beds with soft bumper pads to protect the pet and even provide a soft resting place for their heads at the front door. It is a dog bed made for pampered pet!

A dog person's home depicts their love of canines. Family pictures and handprints tell the story of the generations of family members. A mahogany pawprint frame allows loving pet owners to create an impression of their pets paw, and then elegantly display it alongside a picture of your dog for years to come.

Dog owners: take the next step and go beyond the essentials of caring for your pet. Experience the rewarding relationship that is created when you reach out to a dog and really get to know them. The end result is not only gratifying for you, but studies have shown it can have health advantages. Let those canine companions enrich your life to the fullest! Be a DOG PERSON!

<![CDATA[Back to School Time, Don't Neglect Your Dog]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/back-to-school-time-dont-neglect-your-dog/ Dog eating homework Traditionally, summer is over when the school year begins. The morning rush to get everyone out on time can leave your pet feeling neglected. On school mornings, a greeting may only be a pat on the head, when all summer long your dog received a belly rub before breakfast. Are you tripping over your dog, trying to gather school books, lunches and locating shoes? Dogs notice these changes and want their customary attention.

A great way to include your dog in a back to school morning routine is a walk to the bus stop or walk your dog all or part way to school with your child. Not only will your dog enjoy the long walk, but the other walkers and friends at the bus stop can pet the dog. If you drive your children to school, your dog will enjoy the car ride to school. A routine that involves your attention will make your dog so happy!

Dogs sleep a lot during the day. They also can get bored and be destructive. Interactive dog toys like Hide-A-Bee Puzzle is a plush dog toy in the shape of a bee hive with three 2-1/2" diameter holes in it. It comes with three squeaker bees (about 5" long) that you hide inside the hive. Your dog's mission--and we think he'll decide to accept it--is to stalk those buzzy bees and pull them out of the holes in the hive.

Kong Original Rubber Dog Toy filled with dog treats is a safe way to keep your pet busy. "Kong enrichment devices are the anecdote for boredom and bad diets, which are the plague of modern dogs. Pursuit play and safe mastication are powerful and necessary canine behaviors which only Kong natural rubber and their shapes satisfy. Not just another dog toy, Kongs are reliable tools to prevent serious behavior problems and simply to deliver happiness to dogs." (Dr. Roger Mugford. Company of Animals)

Once everyone is gone for the day, prevent separation anxiety by leaving a worn t-shirt or pillowcase near your dog's bed. Your scent will make them feel secure when the family is not home. Even though it might seem like your day goes fast, your dog might be feeling lonely.

When you come home from school and work spend some time playing with your dog. Cute back to school plush dog toys include a Back To School Friends School Bus Dog Toy and Back To School Friends Crossing Guard Dog Toy. Fun-shaped school related squeaker dog toys are amusing twist on the Back to school routine.

Reading your school work out loud will help you study and your dog will enjoy hearing the sound of your voice. You will be surprised how quickly History and English reading assignments are finished with your best friend at your side! A dog t-shirt, I'm Smarter than Your Honor Student is a Trendy cool gray t-shirt that speaks a pet's mind. Very deserving after all you taught "THE DOG" all there is to know!

<![CDATA[Fun Things To Do With Your Dog]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/fun-things-to-do-with-your-dog/ Dog PlayingLooking for something fun to do after a grueling week at work? Many townships have bike trails. In my town the bike trail follows the power lines with corn fields and small shrubbery along the perimeter of the trail. From beginning to end the trail is 5 miles, so running, hiking, and rollerblading end to end is a doable distance for most dog owners and their dogs. On the lighter side, play follow the leader and off trail hide and seek in the shrubbery. Before you go, make sure your dog is healthy enough and fit enough to enjoy your planned activities.

<![CDATA[Caring For Your Elderly Dog]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/caring-for-your-elderly-dog/ It happens to all of us. As we get older things don't work as well as they used to. A ache, a pain, the fine print looks blurry-our bodies are giving us signals to make changes in our lifestyle. An aging pet experiences a lot of the same symptoms as pet owners. If your dog is not acting "normal", then it is time for a checkup with the veterinarian.

What is considered old? Humans say 40 is the new 30, and so on. Dogs have a calculated age as well. Generally, a large dog who is 7 years or older is considered middle to senior aged and smaller breed dogs, are not typically considered in their geriatric years until they are around 12 plus years. Medium sized dogs are therefore between 8 and 11 years old before they typically start to slow down.

greying-muzzleAs the golden years approach dogs tend to have some graying around the face, especially on the muzzle. You may notice that your dog is being more cautious and is slower getting up, lying down, and struggling going up the stairs. Arthritis is common in dogs as they age, particularly larger breeds.

As dogs age you might notice a bluish transparent cloudy film in the pupil area. This is a normal consequence of aging. The medical term for this is lenticular sclerosis. lenticular-sclerosisThis condition is different than cataracts and a pet's vision is not compromised, even though it looks like there is something obstructing their sight. Larger breed dogs tend to suffer from muscle atrophy. The hind and hips begin to lose their strength. A pet with dementia barks for no reason has accidents and sometimes roams to a remote part of the house and is not themselves around loved ones. It is upsetting to see our pets go through this aging process, but dog owners can do a lot to make life easier of your older dog.

Dog food for geriatric dogs includes special ingredients for a healthy diet. Arthritic Relief Dog Cookies is a great way of supplementing your dog's diet with cookies containing herbs, vitamins, minerals and essential elements known to build strong joints and relieve inflammation, your dog should be playful again. Alfalfa and cod liver oil is used to reduce the discomforts of arthritis. Proper amounts of Vitamin C are necessary for good adrenal function, to make enough cortisone, resulting in arthritic symptoms. That's why pure applesauce is in the cookies. These dog treats formulated for aging dogs but are so reward your dog is so many ways

If your dog is accustomed to sleeping with you or sitting with you on the sofa, Pet Studio sells a Wicker Ramp and 3 Steps for Pets. The Ramp/Steps easily convert from steps to a ramp to make it easy for aging or arthritic pets to reach sofas, beds, and more. The pet steps even add a nice accent to any room.

A geriatric dog needs a lot of rest. Comfortable bedding like a Fleece Top Rectangular Dog Bed with premium spring wound spun poly filling for maximum loft after continued use with cedar bits for added for freshness and removable cover for washing is a great option for an aging pet.

As dog owners you know your dog better than anyone else. Noticing changes in your dog's appetite, physical appearance as well as the way your dog interacts with you and their dog toys can alert you that they are approaching their golden years. Consult your veterinarian on ways to help your dog remain happy and comfortable. With a little extra love and attention, our senior dog companions will be with us for many more dog days.

<![CDATA[Water Fun with Your Dog]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/water-fun-with-your-dog/ Beautiful summer weather is a perfect excuse to enjoy the great outdoors. Some of us are "water people" and just like some dogs are "water dogs". Sometimes a dog breed that doesn't typically make a splash will enjoy the water if they are encouraged or just want to join in the fun!

There are canines that enjoy swimming with people, retrieving toys or simply just running around in the water. Certain dog breeds have been bred to be around water. Some of these breeds are: Labrador Retrievers, Newfoundland, Golden Retrievers, Irish Water Spaniels, Portuguese Water Dogs, and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Some Poodles and Spaniel breeds also enjoy the water. Don't rule out many mixed breeds that are always ready to dive in!

Pets need daily exercise. Your pet will not only be healthier, but calmer when indoors. Including your dog in your day at a nearby lake can be a fun adventure for all. Taking a swim with your dog and playing ball in the water is a lot of fun. A great dog toy for dogs who love the water and landlubbers, too, is Grriggles Floaty Tug Whale Dog Toy. This floating neoprene dog toy with attached rope handle makes it easy to play toss and tug games in or out of the water.

To prevent water fatigue, dog life preservers are available in many sizes and styles to keep your pet safe in the water. This will also help dog owners relax, knowing their dog is water safe. Your dog might not know when they are tired and need to take a break out of the water. Relaxing on shore for a bit will recharge both of you.

If you don't want to travel outside of your own backyard, your dog can take a dip in your pool. This is really a personal preference since some pool filters can't handle dog hair. Even if your dog doesn't shed, pool owners have differing opinions about pets in the pool. Sometimes dogs can rip the liner or damage the pool equipment. A solution is a separate pool made especially for dogs. The Guardian Gear Dog Swimming Pool measures 12"H x 47"D and is made from 100% PVC. The durable dog pool is portable, easy to fill and empty, and made of extra tough PVC for lasting use. Perfect for your dog to have a refreshing dip in the backyard, or put the pool on a deck or patio. The Doggy swimming pool folds down completely, making it easy to pack for summer vacations and easy to store during the winter months.

The Dog Days of Summer are here. Give your dog cooling relief from the heat. Have a wonderful summer and share your love of the water with your pet.

<![CDATA[The Value Of A Dog Leash]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/dog-leashes/ Dog Owners should know the value of a dog leash. A dog leash is a great way to protect your pet from the dangers the outside world can hold.

Regardless of what breed of dog you own, an unsupervised pet can get in trouble. Most pet owners treat their pets like children, and just like a young child should not be outside without boundaries, neither should a dog.

There are so many distractions outside that could cause a dog to wonder off. The sound of diesel engines, especially delivery trucks and motorcycles cause a reaction. They not only continually bark, but many time chases after the vehicle. This is dangerous to the driver and also having your pet in the street is another danger.

Other distractions are wildlife. Birds, squirrels, rabbits and deer can make any well trained dog forget their manners and take off. By the time you look outside to check on your dog, they might be too far away to hear you. When they return many times they have rolled in something, smell quite bad and can acquire ticks as well. On trash pickup days, on the dog's way home, they might stop and dig in a garbage can or two

Letting your dog wander the neighborhood can irritate your neighbors, especially if your dog decides to poop on their lawn or dig on their property. Young children can also be afraid if they are on bikes or running and yelling and a dog decides to bark or chase them. The dog might be playing, but young children might not realize this and can get hurt in their attempt to run away from the dog

Even if your dog is not aggressive, a stranger might approach the pet to read a dog tag or a young child sees a cute dog and hugs the dog and the dog nips or bites. This is a devastating situation for everyone: the injured, the owner and the confused dog. The pet owner is responsible.

A fenced is yard is a secure place for dogs to run leash free. For pet owners who have limited space or just don't have a fence, go to a Dog Park. Dog Parks are a perfect place for dogs to play and socialize with other dogs and exercise in a fenced in area. Dog Parks are popping up in most townships. To locate a Dog Park in your area, contact your municipality or ask your veterinarian.

Taking care of your pet is a large responsibility. Dogs must be supervised at all times to keep them safe. A dog on a leash is a simple solution to keep your dog out of harm's way

Dog Leashes come in many styles to best suit the dog and the dog owner. There are 4 foot leashes that are great for city dogs; hands free dog leashes are great for exercising along with your dog, couplers for walking multiple dogs; retractable leashes offer flexibility; and the basic 6 foot leash typically is offered in one inch and 5/8 widths to accommodate most dogs. Jakes Dog House offers many stylish choices styles to suit a dog and owners personality and keep your dog protected.

<![CDATA[Dogs Get Allergies Too!]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/dogs-get-allergies-too/ Many dogs can suffer from allergic reactions to various things. Breeds such as Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Schnauzers, and Terriers may be genetically pre-disposed to allergies, specifically, allergies caused by ingredients found in food.

Food allergies may manifest themselves in cats and dogs in the following ways: Their skin becomes itchy and irritated on their face, feet, ears, forelegs, armpits and amongst the area around the base of the tail. In addition, frequent inner ear infections, loss of hair, extreme scratching, hot spots, and skin infections that may respond to antibiotics but return after the antibiotics are completed. Increased incidence of bowel movements is another symptom of dogs with food allergies. Dogs normally have around 1.5 bowel movements daily, where food allergies may increase the frequency to 3 or more per day.

Common ingredients found in dog food such as preservatives, additives, peanut butter and tomatoes can cause your dog to have an allergic reaction. Peanut butter is a common ingredient found in dog biscuits, and tomato paste is often times found in dry dog food. Protein is another culprit of dog allergies and can be found in items such as chicken, beef, carbohydrates, wheat or corn. Most veterinarians suggest a diet of lamb and rice for dogs with such allergic reactions.

You can prepare allergy free pet food for dog at home. Remember, dogs love fresh vegetables such as carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. Keep in mind that vegetables also provide additional benefits that will help your dog or cat live a longer more healthy life. Be sure to change your dog's diet gradually as to avoid stomach problems.

Some dog allergies are caused by environmental factors. Pets are frequently allergic to trees, grass, pollen and fabrics made of wool or nylon. Others environmental causes include plastic, rubber materials, mites, flea bites or insects. After their body's become exposed to these substances, they respond to these allergens by becoming itchy. If dogs scratch at the irritant too much, they may develop sores which create an ideal place for a bacterial infection. When dogs are not in direct contact with the allergen but still experience symptoms, Atopy is usually the reason. Atopy is dermatitis caused by inhalation rather than physical contact. This normally occurs as a result of inhalation of pollen, dust, mold, or any allergy substance in the air.

Paws, ears, and face are common areas that become inflamed by allergies. Consult with your veterinarian about controlling pet allergies. To heal sores on a dog's body, treatments such as fatty acid supplements, hypoallergenic shampoo and hydrocortisone creams are very effective. Veterinarians use antihistamines to relieve the dogs itching and make life more comfy for your canine friend. There are some side effects to be aware of when using an antihistamine such as sleepiness, hyperactivity, constipation, dry mouth & lack of appetite. Be sure you have consulted your vet before using any medication on your dog.

When dogs have allergies, the allergy usually presents itself in the form of a sore on the dogs back or belly. These sores often time force the dog to lick or claw at the area causing the hair to fall out. Food allergies as well as environmental culprits can make your dog's life unbearable. Zeroing in on the cause of the allergy will improve your pet's quality of life! Jake's Dog House has many wheat and corn free dog treat choices that will make your dog's tail wag!

<![CDATA[Dog t-Shirts]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/dog-t-shirts/ Our dogs already have enough personality but there are so many ways we can help them express it. One fun way is through fun dog tee shirts.

What would your dog say if they could talk? Would they say they were a tough guy? How about sexy? With attitude tee shirts there are unlimited things that your dog can say through their tee shirts.

If your dog is an athlete you can buy him/her a cute breathable tank top to go running outside in. These tank tops are made of breathable mesh. These are typically machine washable, so they are just as easy to take care of as our own clothes.

Does your dog think they are royalty? Treat them that way with rhinestones on their back. They can say anything from 'princess' to 'king'.

Dogs may think they are royalty but they still love their owners unconditionally. Let them show that love through cute designs and sayings on their tee shirts. Some cute shirts that I've liked are 'I'm with gorgeous or I'm with handsome' tank or tee shirt.

Some owners complain that their dog wont keep cute tee shirts or tank tops like these on. Usually the problem is that they haven't been measured correctly. Measurements of your pets neck and chest have to be accurate to insure that your dog will find these tee shirts comfortable.

Measure from your pet's neck to its tailbone. Then measure the all around your pet's chest. If you have any questions about whether a size will fit right for any reason, contact a consultant from the company you are choosing to order from. They will be able to answer any questions you may have to insure that this is both a great experience for you and your dog.

Check out some fun attitude shirts and tank tops today to find the perfect fit for your dog. Help him/her express what they've been wanting to all along.

<![CDATA[Signs of Affection]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/signs-of-affection/ Pet loyalty is unconditional. We love our pets even when they do things pet owners are not too happy about. This relationship is similar to the relationship between a parent and child. A naughty child and a dog look at us those puppy eyes and manipulate us into instant forgiveness.

We share many expressions about our unconditional love for our pets and our children. One form of expression that is currently very popular is car magnets. My child is an Honor Student, or plays on a local soccer or football team magnets adorn cars. Sharing your pet's interests and personality via a car magnet is also quite creative.

Popular paw print pet car magnets include: It's All About My Dog; Back Seat Barker; My Grandchild is A Dog; GOT MUTT?; Cat Lover; Obedience School Dropout. Some car magnets come in a Bone shape: I Love My Rescue; I Love My Dogs; I Love My Crazy Dog; Princess On Board; King On Board. Sometime a simple word magnet says it all: woof; meow; cattitude. Cute Car Magnets will always keep your pet in your thoughts! They are heavy duty magnets and are perfect for Cars, Trucks & Mailboxes.

Cute Paw Print Window Decals will always have your dog in your thoughts! These light weight Window Decals attach easily with the attached suction cup. The window decals are dog breed specific. There is a decal for almost every dog breed. The decals say, I Love My Black Lab and Fear this Black Lab (or whichever dog breed you prefer). Window decals are another fun way for dog lovers to show their pet pride.

As guests enter your home, let them know you love pets. Wipe Your Paws doormat is funny yet functional. Your friends will laugh out loud when they arrive at your door. Doormats are 18" x 27" and made from 100% Olefin indoor/outdoor carpet with stitched edges and color fast ink. Cleaning is easy, simply wash with hose and dry flat.

Parents make hand prints of their children when they are little. Some are done with paint, others are done in plaster. Why not do the same with your pet's paw print? A Mahogany Wood Pawprints Wall Frame Pet Keepsake allows loving pet owners to create an impression of their pets paw, and then elegantly display it for years to come. With only the highest quality components, Pawprints can be displayed anywhere in your home. Whether for you, friends, or family, Pawprints makes the perfect gift that is sure to bring years of joy. Non-toxic and simple to use, creating your lasting impression is easier than imaginable.

Pet owners are proud of their pets and like to brag and share their devotion to animals with the world. Our dogs and cats are an important part of our lives, so why not share your pet's personality with humanity. Dog People and Cat People alike; treat their dogs and cats like their children. Car Magnets and window decals on pet owner's cars and paw print doormats and pawprint keepsakes in pet lover's homes are some signs of affection for our canine and feline family members.

<![CDATA[Travel with Your Pet Safely and Comfortably]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/travel-with-your-pet-safely-and-comfortably/ Vacation time is right around the corner. Memorial Day Weekend a lot of us hit the road for a weekend getaway or daily road trips. Taking your pet along makes the trip a complete family outing. Most dogs love to ride in cars and its fun to take them along with you wherever you go. There are some important things to keep in mind when travelling with your pet. Keeping your dog safe and content in the car will make the road trip more enjoyable for you and also aid in your safety. An unrestrained dog or cat in the car during travel can be a hazardous distraction to a driver. There is pet gear designed especially for dog travel.

Animals should be secure during the trip and not allowed to jump around or hang out of the window. Don't allow your pet to ride with their head outside the window. There is a danger of inner ear damage, lung infections, and injury from objects flying by your car. Use your car's air conditioner to provide cool air for your dog.

There are serious dangers with unrestrained pets that travel in the car. Even if your pet is well behaved in the car, you still have to consider your pet's safety if you to slam on your brakes or get into an auto accident.

Make certain your pet does cannot roam around the vehicle. Options include a pet safety belt, pet harness or pet car seat. These pet auto travel safety devices ensure that should an accident happen your pet is not thrown from the vehicle or into other passengers.

A dog auto harness that attaches to the car's safety belt is a safe substitute to a dog crate. A properly fitted auto pet harness will allow your pet to sit and lie down comfortably during travel and will provide protection during sudden stops or emergency turns.

Car Safety Vest Dog Harness by O'Donnell is your dog's protection while traveling in a vehicle. These are the only pet harnesses to be crash tested to the same standards as a child safety seat. Thirty (30) lbs. at 30 mph. There is a universal metal buckle that fits into the seat belt receptacle. The harness is manufactured from ballistic nylon for security in use. The vest style harness is for your pet's protection.

A pet car seat is another great option for pet travel. It lets small dogs look out the car window, comfortably and safely. The Lookout II is like the original Lookout but, for added value, has a pull-out tray at the bottom to hold food and water dishes, toys, chews, and leash. If your pet is using an auto harness or pet car seat in the passenger front seat, be sure the passenger airbag is turned off. A deployed airbag can cause severe injury to pets.

In California the "Buckle Up" law applies to pets as well as people. The California "tether law" fines drivers a minimum of $50.00 when animals are not restrained in the car. In other states like New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, dogs are not permitted to ride unrestrained in the back of a pickup truck.

Dog crate or dog carriers that are on the car seat need to be buckled in so they do not shift when the vehicle turns. Small dog crates will most likely fit on the floor of the car and large dog crates will probably fit in the back of a SUV or van.

Another interesting auto safety option is a Backseat Hammock Pet Car Safety which creates a comfortable hammock for your pet by attaching easily to your front and rear headrests. It closes the gap between the front and backseats so pet stays off the floor. It reduces the risk of injury by keeping pets in the back seat. Water resistant, durable, canvas material protects seats from spills and hair. The Backseat Hammock adjusts to fit most vehicles.

To help keep your car clean during pet travel the Guardian Gear Pink Camo Car Seat Cover is a multi-use cover that fits over the back seat and keeps the upholstery free of pet hair, dirt, and moisture. Anti-slip Velcro® strips on back and elastic clips help secure the cover. The Pet car seat cover can also be used as a throw to protect furniture in the home. Measures 51"L x 40"W and fits most auto safety car seats. Pet travel doesn't have to leave the upholstery in your vehicle stained with pet drool, claw marks and accidents.

On a final note… never leave your pet alone in a parked car! In hot weather the inside of a vehicle can be 20 degrees hotter than the outside temperature and cause your pet to overheat. In cold weather the car can hold in the cold and your pet can freeze to death.

Pets are great travelers and enhance the family vacation experience. Whether you are going on a quick trip to a dog park or on long distance vacations; pet auto safety is an important safety precaution for everyone on the road!

<![CDATA[A Canine Birthday Party]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/a-canine-birthday-party/ Everybody has one day each year that is their day. We all look forward to our birthdays even if it means we are getting older. Humans only mark the end of another year, dogs mark the end of 7 years … and they don't complain about getting older!

Your four-legged companion's birthday is a special day! Many of us treat our pets as our children. Remembering the day your canine buddy came into the world is a remarkable memory. If you don't know the exact date of your pet's birthday, they won't mind if you make the date the day you adopted them or brought them home.

Organizing a pet party can be an enjoyable undertaking and with a bit of creativity, dog owners can host a fun party for dogs and their owners. Pet Celebrations can range from a simple birthday bone to an all out birthday celebration complete with party favors! The highlight of the celebration will be the attention your dog will receive all day long!

Just for the fun of it we decided to have a birthday party for our Bichons 5th birthday.

Since we do not have a fenced in yard, we had the birthday party for our bichons, Wilma and Betty at a local dog park. The guest list included 5 small dogs and their owners. We gave each dog owner a Zebra Bon Ton Dog Walking Pick Up Kit when they arrived with their dog. This served as a gentle reminder for them to clean up after their dogs. The dogs had a fun time running and playing with each other in the small dog section of the dog park. We also brought a doggy pool for the dogs to stay cool and a few travel water bowls. Excited dogs become thirsty very quickly.

The birthday dogs were the VIPs of the park wearing a Happy Birthday Dog Scarf Decorated with Dog Bones. We sang Happy Birthday to Wilma and Betty with a Big Happy Birthday Dog Bone and Birthday Candle lit to celebrate another fabulous year. Both dogs huffed and puffed a little bit to put out the candle. The other dogs didn't even complain about the drool on the birthday cake. All the dogs enjoyed a piece of the Birthday Bone.

Some of Wilma and Betty's favorite birthday presents were: Go Green! Eco Friendly Rope Ring Dog Toy, Dog Rawhide with Peanut Butter Dog Treat Dog Chews, Natural 100% Beef Paddywacks Beef Tendons Dog Treat and matching Designer Wild Side Zebra Print Dog Dresses. Our friends also made a donation to our local Animal Shelter and brought old towels, blankets and cleaning supplies that we brought over to the shelter.

Every dog left with a doggie bag filled with Assorted Puppy Pop Suckers Dog Treats and a Grriggles Dog Birthday Party Animal Bear. The bichons were exhausted and went right into their dog bed when we arrived home.

We were lucky, the weather, cooperated and the sun was shining all day. When planning your pet's party, the weather can ruin the birthday celebration.

Hosting the party in your home can not only be chaotic, but your dog may feel territorial. A local doggie daycare is an option. They will rent out their playrooms with obstacle courses and dog toys. Wouldn't it be funny to have the owner's race on the agility course as well!

There are so many options for dog birthday parties. Whether you are hosting the party or attending the party it is important to be sure all dog treats and dog toys are appropriate for the birthday dog's breed and size. Bring a leash or carrier in case your dog needs a time out to calm down from all the excitement or if they are feeling aggressive about a toy or another dog toys. Sometimes dogs are like children and need to be reminded of their boundaries. Everyone just wants to have fun and create memories!

Although your dog might not understand what a birthday is … they will definitely appreciate the extra attention. Whether you choose to have a party or go for an extra long walk, enjoy an afternoon in the dog park, play a game of catch, read to your dog or a tummy rubbing, your dog will notice the additional attention.

<![CDATA[Pet Strollers-Pets Should Ride in Style]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/pet-strollers-pets-should-ride-in-style/ Walking your dog is great exercise for you and your pet. Part of living a healthy lifestyle is getting out of your house or apartment and socializing with other people and animals. However, some small dogs, older dogs and cats need a little assistance when venturing out for a lengthy walk. Pet strollers are a great option for taking your pet shopping, strolling on the boardwalk at the shore, and additional dog friendly places you travel where dogs need to be enclosed. Dog strollers fare well in a city to keep dogs from running into the street, or tangling their leashes around other pedestrians.

Small pets get tired walking a long distance. I have a golden retriever who needs to run and a small dog, a bichon, who doesn't enjoy exerting herself for much more than a mile. A pet stroller works great for me. My golden gets a good long walk without tiring out Betty the Bichon Frise, who can still enjoy getting fresh air even if she can't walk very far. At the dog park, Betty gets tired and wants to rest in her stroller, while my golden retriever can run and play for hours!

Dog owners are starting to use pet strollers instead of carriers. They're easier on your back, shoulders and neck, and many stores and outdoor cafes are pleased pet owners have dogs completely enclosed. We love to take our pets along wherever we go. Picnics, festivals and other outdoor events can be fun to share with your dog. Dog strollers help prevent your dog from interacting with bugs, other dogs and litter at outdoor events. There are many styles and sizes of pet strollers.

The Original Kittywalk Pet Stroller is a cool alternative to heavy, hot plastic carriers. Your pet can sit in an open mesh environment, or lie beneath the security of the cloth covered privacy parlor to shelter from the elements. With its sturdy safety brakes and easy to unfold design, it's perfect for city dwellers who have always have had to say no to a walk in the park. Pet strollers offers pet lovers the option to say YES to sharing more outings with their fur-bearing family members. As Seen on The Good Morning America show! The stroller will hold 25+ lbs, your cat and dog will love it The Original Kittywalk also has a larger model for taking your dog and your dog's friend or both of your dogs out together. The Pet Stroller SUV is robust with tough hard rubber 8 inch wheels and a larger cabin accommodating up to 50 lbs or holds multiple pets with a shoulder height of up to 14 inches.

Check this out … a car seat and pet stroller in one! The Guardian Gear™ Blue All-Purpose Traveler easily converts from a stroller, to a car seat, to a pet transport in minutes without tools!

The Pet Stroller features swivel front wheels and a rear wheel braking system. Lightweight tubular steel frame folds down in seconds for easy storage. Durable 600D polyester Traveler features removable, adjustable carrying straps, backstraps for seatbelt attachment, and Velcro® tabs to secure it to stroller frame. Zippered mesh top opening allows easy access while providing ample ventilation. Roll-up flap provides privacy and a safety clip attaches to your pet's collar or harness for added security. The Pet Stroller measures 33"L x 18"W x 37"H and holds up to 30 lbs.

When your travel needs require both a pet carrier and a pet stroller, the Cruising Companion Uptown Pet Stroller & Removable Bronze Pet Carrier is a great solution. It has a Chic style and provides comfortable transportation for pets. A removable carrier has mesh sides and top for ventilation and an interior collar clip keeps pet secure. The lightweight gold-tone frame folds easily for storage. The Pet Stroller measures 35 1/2" x 17 1/2" x 37", the Carrier measures 15 1/2" x 17 1/2" x 37" and Weighs 13 lbs, accommodates pets up to 20 lbs.

I like the idea of a carrier and stroller in one, especially when visiting my extended family. Betty the beautiful bichon likes sleeping in the carrier and it is also a great get away for her when she needs some downtime away from the relatives.

Dog strollers give dog owners many additional options to spend quality time with our pets. When a leash and pet carrier are not sufficient to accommodate your pet; pet strollers have models that will suit a pet owner and pet's needs. What a convenient, fun, and easy way to transport pets!

Time to shed those winter pounds … your dog is ready to strut around the neighborhood and dog park looking good. Make your pet feel special with a springtime spruce up!

A pretty coat starts off with a bath in all natural Tea Tree Oil & Aloe Vera Dog Shampoo. Tea Tree Oil has long been recognized as an effective and beneficial ointment for hot spots, skin irritations, insect bites and itching. For a real treat, lavish your pet with a SPA treatment. This mild yet concentrated, lightly foaming facial cleanser soothes and balances. It has natural exfoliating activity and is slightly hydrating. The refreshing blend of vanilla and blueberry effectively removes dirt and tear stains, and will not sting eyes. Great for all skin types and all ages of pets! If your pet has visible tear stains, try Angels' Eyes®. It is the first product specifically developed for BOTH DOGS & CATS to eliminate unsightly tearstains from the inside out! Angels' Eyes® also helps to eliminate staining around the mouth and their coats due to licking. Angels' Eyes® starts working before the tear stains begin and never adds food dyes or wheat which can have negative effects on your pet. All ingredients are products of the USA. Just sprinkle Angels' Eyes daily on regular food.

Follow the shampoo with and a good brushing. Depending on the breed of dog and their coat, there are so many types of dog brushes. Millers Forge make great mat breakers and dog shedding brushes. The Shedding Slicker Brush provides double action - long & short pins work at two levels rather than one as in standard Slicker Brushes. Better results with no extra effort - particularly useful on breeds with shedding problems. The Slicker brush is designed to remove all dead hair. For all coat types: long-haired; wire & course-hair; short & smooth-hair breeds.

Don't forget about your dog's ears. You want to make sure they can hear you loud and clear. One of the easiest ways to remove discharge and ear wax from pet's ears is Clear Quest Professional Pet Ear Wipes. Premoistened pet ear cleaner wipes are formulated with antibacterial and antifungal agents to minimize ear odor and prevent infections. Use 2-3 times per week for best results.

That perfect smile and dog breath requires brushing your dog's teeth. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, more than 80% of dogs suffer from periodontal disease by the age of two. Help your dog ward off bad breath, gum disease, multiple infections, and heart disease by consistently brushing your dog's teeth. The unique design of the KissAble toothbrush makes it easy to clean all three sides of the tooth with one stroke. The soft bristles massage the gums while the firmer bristles clean teeth. The vanilla flavored toothpaste is All Natural and is great for dogs and their people!

Trimming your pet's nails every 10 days ensures a professionally groomed look everyday! Millers Forge Dog Nail clippers are Veterinarians and Groomers choice! My favorite part of grooming my female dog is polishing her nails. It is important to use nail polish for dogs because it provides long lasting color that is water-resistant and chip-resistant and dries quickly. Top Performance Color Paw Nail Polish for Dogs has a 3 Color Set that has great pastel colors for Spring.

About now your pet is feeling quite pampered! Eyes, Ears, Mouth , a pretty coat and perfect nails … your dog is ready to take on all the other dog's in the neighborhood & dog park!

<![CDATA[Glucosamine Joint Relief for Dogs]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/glucosamine-joint-relief-for-dogs/ Does your dog or cat suffer from arthritis, hip dysplasia, knee dysplasia, elbow dislocation or other joint problems?

Dog owners need to be aware of changes in their dog's behavior. If your pet starts gaining lot of weight, sleeping more, not interest in playing and has difficulty climbing stairs they may have arthritis. Arthritis sufferers also have stiffness when walking, getting up or down; smaller dogs suffering from arthritis whimper or growl when picked up or handled.

Hip dysplasia is a form of osteoarthritis. Hip dysplasia is the abnormal development of the hips, which results in an increasing amount of looseness in the hip joint. Dogs can suffer from degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) that is not caused by hip dysplasia or they can suffer with it because they have hip dysplasia.

Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is a genetic, painful, crippling disease that causes a dog's hip to weaken, deteriorate, and become arthritic. It is a hereditary condition and is the leading cause of lameness occurring in the rear legs of dogs.

Generally, hip dysplasia (a malformed hip socket) strikes generally in larger breeds of dogs for example, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Great Danes to name a few, although medium and small breeds can have hip dysplasia also.

Unfortunately many dogs suffer from arthritis and experience hip pain. An overweight dog can be at risk for joint pain. Keeping your dog's weight at what is normal for its breed is important, along with making certain your dog is getting all the proper nutrients its body requires. Excessive weight puts a great deal of stress on the joints. This is especially true if your dog is predisposed to hip dysplasia or has arthritis. Arthritic Relief Dog Cookies All Natural Dog Treats are a delicious dog treat to supplement your dog's diet with cookies containing herbs, vitamins, minerals and essential elements known to build strong joints and relieve inflammation. Alfalfa and cod liver oil are used to reduce the discomforts of arthritis. Proper amounts of Vitamin C are necessary for good adrenal function, to make enough cortisone, resulting in arthritic symptoms. That's why pure applesauce is in the cookies.

Exercise is important for everyone, especially your pet, however if your dog is predisposed to hip dysplasia limit its exercise to long walks, swimming, and very short runs. Do not put excess pressure on your dog's limbs.

There are nutritional supplements on the market made especially for cats and dogs that can be given on a daily basis that will help maintain a healthy joint system from young to senior cats and dogs. Connectin Granular Dog Joint & Arthritis Food Supplement is a veterinarian proven glucosamine-based supplement for dogs, cats and horses with arthritis and other joint disorders. Connectin - Granular is a delicious Roast Beef flavor - just sprinkle over your pet's food or mix with water to make gravy.

Connectin Chewables Joint & Arthritis Supplement for Dogs is a chewable option for Dog arthritis relief and Dog hip pain relief. It has a delectable Roast Beef flavor-give to your dog or cat as a chewable treat.

Pro Care Pet 100% ORGANIC PRO-JOINT 100% ORGANIC JOINT Bone is a tasty treat with the necessary organic ingredients to strengthen connective tissue and enhance bone and joint integrity. Delicious and nutritious - this product enables freedom of movement and comfort for your dog!

Animals produce a certain amount of glucosamine within their bodies. As animals grow older, their bodies lose the ability to make enough glucosamine. Having sufficient glucosamine in your pet's body is very important to producing the nutrients needed to stimulate the production of synovial fluid, the fluid which lubricates your pet's cartilage and keeps your pet's joints healthy. Without enough glucosamine, the cartilage in their weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees deteriorates. The cartilage then hardens and forms bone spurs, deformed joints, and limited joint movement. This is how the debilitating disease of arthritis develops.

Glucosamine and chondroitin help to reduce symptoms and to rebuild the cartilage and restore fluid.

Sea Mobility Glucosamine Jerky Strips for Dogs offers Glucosamine joint relief. Sea "Mobility" provides mobility enhancement and flexibility improvement from the natural power of Sea Cucumber, MSM, and Glucosamine. Real Beef, chicken and venison (USDA) jerky strips, are super-powered with nutraceuticals to help maximize joint function when joint mobility is critical for your dog's lifestyle. Excellent for dogs from puppies to "Seniors". Great for any dog that can't swallow a pill or capsule.

Before doing any "self prescribed" medicating for your pet, always get the advice of your pet's veterinarian.

Dogs with arthritis, hip dysplasia and joint pain can live long and healthy lives with a little help from their friends and as a dog owner you owe it to your pet to be as accommodating and loving as you can be.

<![CDATA[DOG TOYS … DOG TOYS … DOG TOYS]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/dog-toys-dog-toys-dog-toys/ We all love our toys. Fun and games … that’s what the GOOD life is about!! Dogs love playing with toys. There are toys that dogs can play with independently and toys for dog lovers and their dogs to play together. Playing with your pet is awesome for everyone’s mental and physical well being!

Dogs need toys for entertainment; otherwise they will get bored and chew or play with their owner’s stuff! Especially puppies, they instinctively chew and need appropriate puppy toys for teething and training purposes.

The right toy for your dog depends on the breed and size of the pet.

Chew toys like knotted ropes, rubber dog toys and heavy canvas durable dog toys are suitable for most breeds. Treat filled toys, like Kong’s biscuit ball not only keep dogs busy, but the chewing aids in tartar and plaque removal.

Puppies enjoy chewing on sheepskin and fleece toys with attached ropes. Teething puppies also enjoy frozen toys. Freezing a nylabone puppy toy or putting ice in their Kong will sooth teething pain.

Dog toys that squeak are a favorite. Squeak dog toys can entertain a dog for hours. It is hard to figure out if the dog likes the sound of the squeak or is trying to make the toy stop squeaking by trying to get the squeaker out of the toy! Beware of heavy chewers that they don’t chew off too much.

When you and your pet play together, tug dog toys and fetch dog toys are the most popular. Retrievers enjoy chasing balls and Frisbees and benefit from the exercise and your devoted attention. Durable Frisbees are important. Cracked plastic can injure your dog. Playing with a tennis ball at the dog park is a lot of fun; however the sand and dirt that accumulates on the wet ball can wear away the enamel on your dog’s teeth. Durable rubber balls are better for a game of fetch in a dog park.

Playing a game of tug-of-war with your dog with a rope toy or sturdy dog toy is a good time. Dogs need to know limits and understand when the game is over. Aggressive dogs might not identify with the limits of this game – so be careful when having tug matches with your dog. It could be dangerous for a child to play a tug-of-war game with a dog. The dog might try to re-establish its hold on the toy and accidentally bite the child.

Plush dog toys and plush puppy toys are very popular. They are comfort toys for your pet. Some pets sleep with stuffed dog toys or just carry them around because they are soft and light.

A toy box for all the dog toys will not only keep your home neat, but it also lets your dog choose from the toy storage box which toy they need during the day. Putting the toys back in the box is another story. Rotating your dog’s toys helps make old toys appear like new toys. Having 2 storage boxes of dog toys that are rotated every month will help prevent dog boredom.

Seasonal dog toys make terrific presents during the holidays, for birthday celebrations and for special occasions during the year. Jakes Dog House has dog toys that will reward your dog for doggie school (plush school bus), celebrate Valentine’s Day (plush red heart with attached rope), St Patrick’s Day (go green rope toy), Jewish Holidays (plush Hanukkah Menorah), Halloween (Trick or Treat BOO Bungee Squeak Toy), Thanksgiving (plush squeaky candy corn), Easter (tennis tummy pink rabbit plush and rope toy), Christmas (puppy buddy Christmas tree) and of course your dog’s birthday (musical singing birthday cake).

Dog toys are essential to keep pets healthy and active. Running, tugging, chewing, snuggling and playing fetch are all part of happy pets lifestyle. Large dogs, small dogs and puppies need the appropriate toy for their size, breed and temperament. There are so many dog toy choices. Ask your veterinarian if you are unsure about a puppy toy or if a particular toy is safe for your dog.

DOG TOYS … DOG TOYS … DOG TOYS … Don’t forget an affectionate pet once in awhile. Why do you think their favorite toy has your smell on it!

<![CDATA[Healthy Dog Treats for a Healthy Dog]]> http://www.jakesdoghouse.com/blog/healthy-dog-treats-for-a-healthy-dog/ Healthy Dog TreatsWe all want to feel young enough to enjoy participating in our favorite activities like bicycling, golfing, swimming or just running around to stay ahead of the game of life. The old antidote, “You are what you Eat” is very true. When we eat balanced diets, including healthy snacks we feel great!

The same is true for your dog. Every dog loves their treats. Offering healthy treats to your dog will help them maintain a balance in their lives. Obesity in dogs is a major health concern. Just as with people, canine obesity can lead to very serious health problems. Dogs need the balance of a healthy diet and exercise to maintain their wellness.

About 20-40% of dogs are overweight or obese. Veterinarians currently see more and more overweight and obese dogs. A lot of dog owners cannot resist when their dog begs for a treat. Our human diet isn't healthy for dogs and can be a factor in their weight gain. Table scraps are one of the major causes of obesity in dogs. Feeding your dog healthy treats formulated for dogs has a nutritional balance designed for a domesticated dog. Unfortunately, dogs don't live as long as we want them to, so it makes sense to feed them healthy treats that does not lead to obesity that can shorten their lives.

Healthy dog treats that are made with only the best natural, ingredients and still taste great help pets live happier, healthier and longer lives. Dog food treats that offer high-quality nutritional value for your dog include ingredients containing whole wheat, freeze dried meat and vegetables made with human-grade ingredients. Reading labels on pet food packaging is just as important for your dog’s food as it is for your food.

Many dogs have allergies or food sensitivities. Common culprits are dyes, flavorings, preservatives, carbohydrates and protein sources. If your pet is sensitive to any of these ingredients, look for treats that are hypoallergenic, and have minimal or no dyes or preservatives. Or better yet, homemade dog treats are very popular. You can make them at yourself or many bakers sell their homemade treats. Jake’s Dog House offers dog treats made with human grade ingredients that are bought directly from our bakers so our customers can provide healthy homemade dog treats that accommodate their dog’s special diet.

Homemade dog treats made in your kitchen are fun to make and can be tailored to your pet’s special diet. Keep in mind that in addition to wheat, some dogs also have difficulty digesting corn, so if you find a recipe that calls for corn meal or wheat, try using rice flour.

There are many cookbooks with recipes for healthy dog treats. Many dog owners also post their favorite treat recipes online. Please feel free to post your dog’s favorite dog treats and homemade dog treat recipes on Jake’s blog.

Rather than baking biscuits; baking bones is also a favorite dog treat. A dried up beef joint bone can be purchased from your butcher. Choose a bone joint from either a knee or shoulder that is too big for your dog to break or swallow. Boil the bone and then dry it in the oven at 350 degrees F until dry (15 minutes). This bone will probably last forever and will also help with plaque and tarter build up on your dog’s teeth.

Dog treats should be low in fat, good tasting, and nutritious (high in vitamins and minerals). Vegetables are great treats to offer your dog. You and your dog can munch on raw veggies together, baby carrots, broccoli, sweet red peppers, bananas, pineapple, and apple or pears. Doesn’t it make sense to share your good eating habits with your best friend? Avoiding French fries, chips, pizza and other kinds of “junk” food will benefit both of you!

Research has indicated that a dog's happy face and love make us healthy and happy humans, so why not give your dog healthy dog food treats to let them know how much you love them.

The most important word to remember when thinking about healthy dog food or healthy dog treats is natural. Natural dog treats are healthy dog treats that keep our dogs happy.
